When I change out my transmission, final drive and pto fluids the specs call for 90w (mineral oil). If I cannot find mineral oil or am concerned it will leak all out whats the beat alternative? I dont want to trash bushings. I am running through this list now on my recently purchased 1950 Farmall Cub

90w mineral gear oil is available from Tractor Supply. It is labeled Ford Tractor Transmission Fluid.

This may or may not be totally accurate, but this is what I use from my local NAPA store. Since I own 3 cubs, I buy it by the 5 gallon jug, and for ease of use, transfer it to a 1 gallon jug.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
This is exactly what I need to get them running. My adad last had them running about 4 years ago so might not be too bad of condition.
I'm actually posting this to be able to log my 2 posts in so I can access the manuals.

I usually transfer it to a one gallon jug, but I think I'll check that out!! Getting too old (lazy!) and weak to lift those things without spilling!

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
I'm learning a lot from this forum. I just starting to work on my grandfather's 1949 Farmall Cub. The list above is the game plan I was thinking about. Get it running, then rolling and then work on her looks! She hasn't run in over 30 + years.

I'm reading through this thread as a good resource, but also getting my post count up so that I can use the PDF manuals. Got my first Cub last fall. I've kind of been stuck trying to figure out how to attache the cultivators.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Hi,
Many of the implements have numbers to help identify them.
Some of them only had decals with the number on them, so if the decal is faded away or gone there is no number on the implement.
Below is the Cub 144 Cultivator owner's manual. It is one model of cultivator, there are others. The manual has lots of info, and shows how to put the cultivator on the Cub.
You can look and see if it looks like your cultivator.
You don't use the manual lift lever shown in the manual, if the Cub has Touch Control.

There are manuals at the top of the page, at Cub Info also.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
Thank you very much for this checklist. I just purchased a 1966 Cub and brought it home on a trailer. It runs well and the previous owner said he had changed all the fluids, but I will go back and follow your suggestions, just to be sure. Have a lot of minor things that need to be corrected and adjusted, so hopefully can get some help from this forum.

I wish I found this post 2 weeks ago when I picked up my cub. I'm half way there.

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
back to the trans oil.
I kinda figured most good 80/90 oils would work ??
Is that a bad idea..
recently acquired my second cub...
I better get to work fast..

Re: What to do with a Cub you just brought home
I just bought a non running cub 2 wks ago with single bottom plow, snow/dirt plow on front, pull behind and tractor mount cultivators. Had it running the next day after flushing fuel tank/lines and draining carb. Also cleaned out and inspected under dist. cap and wiped cobwebs out and blew with air. Looked ok, put battery back in and it fired up after a few tries to get the fresh fuel flowing. I have changed the trans oil and put in 80-90W, the old stuff was creamy butterscotch color, nasty. I just joined this forum today to learn and get helpful hints on this cub. Working on the charging system now, just took off hood and found I have a 3 brush generator with a voltage regulator. Looking for a Cut Out switch today to see if that fixes my non charging issue. I tried to excite the gen last night, no luck so maybe this is the issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
Thanks,
Bill
