It had to come home with me today

Postby Jason (IL) » Sun Aug 28, 2005 9:57 pm

I went to a sale today to look at what was suppost to be a Cub with a loader turned out to be a 56 cub w/ a blade and 42" mower along with a belt pully. I prolly paid too much for it but I guess when you see something you want you usually buy it so I did for just over 2200. I think it is to much, did I do OK. It is only Cub # 4 but I have never bought one for this much before all the others were inherited or around 1000 bucks. It runs very well with no smoke at all.

But, I was out mowing and the PTO started grinding and then it just quit and now I get nothing, not even a grinding sound. So I guess I'll have to open her up. My guess is that the slide collar pin broke off. May be wrong.
It is the cub 4 pictures with the mower.
But how did I do.

Jason:

Depending on where you are in the country, will depend on the prices, BUT, I think you probably did ok. Not bad for a 42" mower and a 54A blade... they are worth probably $500.00 to $750.00 themselves if you were to sell them and they are in good shape.. So, taking that into account, then I would say you did ok...

As for :
But how did I do.

This thread might be of some help to you.. at least it would be a beginning : Tranny 101. Of course, liberal use of theGSS-1411 Service Manual would be a good idea as well... :-)

Enjoy the project, it can be very rewarding...

I was just wondering because my first tractor I bought 8 years ago looks just like the I just bought, but it came with several implements. I got a blade, disk, sickle, l-59 mower, plow, rock rake, slip scoop, and paid an entire amount of 2250 for it, which i thought was a great deal at that time.

I will tear into the PTOwed or thurs evening if time time permitts.

Thanks for the advice.

Jason, don't worry about what you paid for it. If it's a good runner as you say then you did all right. Those side emblems are, as you know, worth a goodly portion of your purchase price.

Jason,
You did very good! I'd be proud to own that Cub and implements! You will get more enjoyment out of working and tinkering on it than anything.

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Well I've started looking for a Fast hitch and a set of Turf tires for it today. So if anybody has any leads for a fast hitch here in northern Illinois that would be nice. Since I think I'll just use it for mowing and a little bit of yard work the turf tires would be best. I have not checked on the store here in town but plan to this week sometime. There was thought of selling this one but I hate to see it leave, it looks like to much fun, although people around here keep giving me the rasberries for buying another one. I will fix the PTO this weekend and get it back to mowing.

Have a fun one.
