Hello Folks.
1st. I'd like to thank everyone for any help in advance .
Well. I bought my 1st tractor yesterday.
it is a 65 cub in bad shape but it is all there. the man I bought it from said it last ran two years ago.
I've installed a battery and it turns over but I'm not getting a spark from the coil to distributor wire .
I have used this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfyRzkjei3U to try and track down the problem .
everything test good but still not getting a spark from the coil
I have tested the coil with an ohm meter and it seems to be good
Does anyone have any suggestions

Welcome Bourree.
Try and figure neg or pos ground is correct with new battery install ,and 6 or twelve volt system for ideas from others about coil requirements.
Here's a thread might get you to a stock wiring diagram.

Hi,
Welcome to the website. I didn't watch all of the video, not sure what they said.
You could use a voltmeter and check to see if there is power at the coil when you turn on the ignition switch.
If there is, then I would check the points, they might be corroded from sitting, or were old and burned. If they are too bad, no power will go through them.
You can take them out and hold one at a time on a hard flat surface, and file it flat and shiny, with a large file, or replace them if they look burned too much.
The point material is hard, it takes a good file to fix them.
The condenser could have gone bad from sitting too.
A 1965 Cub is originally 12 volts, negative ground. That was just after they changed to 12 volts, in 1964.
Here is a page from the 1965 Cub owner's manual showing the points. That is info for a Battery Ignition unit, on the right side of the page, the left side is a magneto.
The 2nd link is the whole owner's manual, it has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. Click on the pics makes them bigger.

Re: hello fellow cub owners
Prime the oil pump before you do any thing else.
Next thing is to conduct compression tests, dry then wet.
Compression satisfactory, work on the ignition problem.
Then the fuel system.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Hi,
Here is a picture of where the hole is that I use for priming the oil pump. Just remove the oil filter top, and oil filter, and it is easy to see, use a light if you need to.
I fill a clean oil can with motor oil, and pump it into the hole, you might need more than one filling of the oil can to fill the passages in the engine.

Re: hello fellow cub owners
Thanks Waif,
Checking to see if it was 6 or 12 volts was my first move. The plate on the starter(original) told me it is 12 volts.
And serial # indicate 1965 as date of manufacturer ,, so a negative ground I believe.
And Rudi's server http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Cub%20 ... index.html
is down I guess so I'll look elsewhere for that info.

And I guess I'm kind of lucky it didn't start right away
Thanks Eugene for the advice . I would never thought it necessary to do so
And Glen, thanks so much for excellent picture.
It helped a lot

Suggest you consider attending the Louisiana Cubfest in March, 2017 at Bogalusa. It's not posted on the calendar but will probably be the first weekend. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90688
