Gas on or gas off?

Postby Slim140 » Thu Sep 21, 2017 7:43 am

I been wondering who turns their gas off and who leaves it on with their Cub?

We have 2 Cubs and I leave them both on. Every now and then I get a small leak stain on the ground but not much and not very often.

Both, depends on the tractor.

Standard Cub with ball valve shut off at tank. Close the ball valve at end of work day. Carburetor seeps if I leave the ball valve open over night. Doesn't leak when working.

154 leave the tank shut off open.

WD Allis's, shut off one. The other I leave open, the sediment bowl shut off leaks in the off position.

Had one tractor leak gasoline over a weekend. Lost probably 5 or 10 gallons.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I say it is good practice to shut off. Lately I have not been shutting it off my 49 because it has not been leaking. I do shut off for the winter or other long periods.

I leave my Cub on all the time. The B and the H will drip out of the carb overflow if left on. One of these days I'll rebuild the carburetors and set the float height in both.

I always turn off the fuel in all of my tractors. Most I let them run after I turn off the fuel until they quit. I think that leaves the float bowl mostly empty and less likely to gunk up the carb during long sits between uses.

My cub will slowly drip fuel from the carb when stored. I have an aftermarket inline shutoff valve that I flip every time I park the tractor.
It can sometimes be weeks between use and if I forget to turn off the valve the tank can drip dry.
I suppose I could address the issue causing that drip but it only happens during storage, never while running. I've finally got it running so good I figure I'll leave well enough alone. I can pull that starter after weeks of sitting and it fires like it was run only hours earlier.
My A on the other hand does not leak. I don't do anything with that one though I probably should.

I added a 1/8 ipt ball valve to the outlet of the OEM strainer/fuel shutoff to make it a little easier to turn the fuel off on my '57 LoBoy. The others I turn off the fuel and run the carb as dry as possible.

I only shut the fuel off when I am parking it for the winter hibernation. On the numbered series, the valve is behind a panel so its a pain to access.

I shut off the fuel when done using. I shut off and run dry if not to be used for a period of time say a week or so. I shut off and run dry for long term storage.

It depends whether the carb leaks or not. Leaking carb tractors are shut off after use until I find the time to pull the carb and solve the leaking problem.
