Hello

Postby Jameshmyers » Tue Sep 01, 2020 8:34 pm

New to the forum.

Was given an old 1955 300U that was in disrepair. This tractor is absolutely amazing. I am wanting to take better care of it and figured checking this forum out would be helpful.

First and foremost is some much needed fluid changing!

See you all around.

Thanks, would anyone have suggestions on what to do with old, water-filled hydraulic fluid?

When draining the differential/transmission, do they have a shared reservoir, or are there two separate compartments?

(Or where to look on this forum, I’m sure I’m not the first to ask these questions)

If you let it sit for a few days, usually the water will separate out and settle on the bottom of the pan. Recycle the oil and then try to figure out how to dispose of the water.

The transmission and differential are a shared reservoir. However, there may be more than one low spot and thus more than one drain plug. Accumulated water could be held by each plug. I believe the hydraulic system has a separate reservoir. Water contaminated hydraulic or transmission oil can be recycled the same as motor oil. The transmission can be cleaned up (some) by filling with kerosene (or Diesel fuel), driving it around a bit (NOT pulling anything), then letting it drain for a while. Do NOT do this to the hydraulic system. You can do a partial refill, run, and drain to help flush it. But use ONLY proper hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic system.

Be sure to service the steering gear oil. It is one of the critical maintenance items on that model.

James,
Now that you have two posts under your belt, you have access to the PDF manuals archived on the site. To get there, click on Quick Links in the upper left corner of the page. Then PDF Manuals, then International 300, 350. The number of manuals is limited, but may still be useful to you.
Future questions should be posted in the appropriate tractor model forum. Welcome.

Most of what you will find in that part of the PDF manuals will be for the Farmall H, but some of it directly applies to the 300U. You can also go down the "service manual" path and find a lot of multi-model information that will apply.
