Hi,
The tractor serial number is on the serial number plate on the right side of the Cub, unless the plate is gone.
Sometimes someone paints over the plate, then you can't read the words on it.
The numbers are stamped in the plate, you might be able to see them if it is painted over. Use a good light and get up close to the plate.
Up to about the mid 1950's, the serial number plate had the engine maximum RPM stamped in it too, it was 1800 RPM for those years.
The engine serial number is on the left side of the engine, it is different than the tractor serial number, unless the Cub is an early 1947 Cub.
The number is stamped in the block. You may need to clean the area, and use a good light to see it.
Below is a page from the 1950 Cub operator's manual showing where the numbers are.

When you find the tractor serial number, you can find the year it was made at the top of the page at Cub Info. There are serial number lists there.

Re: New to forem
If the serial number plate is gone, you can probably identify the year of the Cub using the casting codes.
There should be casting date codes on the larger castings on Cubs. They tell the date when the parts were made. They use a letter for the year.
Below is info from TM Tractor Parts showing what the codes are.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/id_004.htm
The info below shows where the codes are.
The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.
The code on the last part on the page, the steering gear housing, usually can't be seen with the tractor assembled.
