New to Me Farmall Cub in MD

Postby k35 » Wed Mar 13, 2024 8:07 pm

I have had cub cadets for many years, 2086, 2182, 149 and 127. I have always wanted a farmall cub. My son bought me a 1955 farmall cub with a fast hitch. It currently does not run but hope to get it running soon. Started working on it yesterday, removed the hood/gas tank (that has a few holes in it), dismantled the carb, and cleaned up the "air filter". Looks like a previous owner converted it to a 12 volt system since it now has an alternator on it. I will be ordering a carb rebuild kit this evening, replace all the fluids and see if I can get is started (the engine spends freely so at least nothing is locked up. Reading through some of the topics and I already came across the "What to do with a cub when you bring it home", good stuff. Looking forward to all the good information available on this forum.

Just in case, (not sure how long it's been since it ran) you probably should prime the oil pump before you try to start it. It's a fairly simple procedure but might save your engine from seizing due to zero oil pressure.
I borrowed this from a Facebook post (thanks Kevin N Renee Love!):

Hi,
Welcome to the website.
I sent you a PM, you get to it at the top of the page.

If there is no spark, the ignition points in the Battery Ignition unit may need servicing, they get old and burned from use, or corroded from sitting. I take them out and use a large flat file on them, or replace them. Wipe off all filings with a clean rag.
The points need the right gap, .020" for the Battery Ignition unit.
The condenser could have quit, or the coil could have quit. :)
