Hello, just got a 48 cub

Postby bumpascub » Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:33 pm

Hello, I just purchased a 48 cub in original condition. I doubt that it has run for many years but I have no actual history. I do know the tractor had been stored in an old barn
for the past 15 or 20 yrs. The coolant had evaporated to a very thick concentrate, the oil was thick and gunky and the gas had long since evaporated out of the tank. The good news is the gas line to the carb was shut off so the carb was clean smelling anyway. I removed the spark plugs and they looked like they had been firing in its last life. My 5 yr old grandson and I changed the fluids, put fresh gas in it and gave it a tow with the Mule. It took a little bit to get it to fire then she took off running. The governor was stiff and she sputtered a bit to begin with but runs fairly smooth and sounds better as it runs. I did add lead substitute to the fuel. We have run it under little load for a couple of hours now and she just keeps getting better.....so far anyway. I have levers all over this rascal which I think were intended to raise and lower implements. Sure was happy and surprised at how well it runs. I asked my grandsons how they like it and the response was "this is the best, Bumpa!" Now to do the fine tuning and get it so it starts with the starter and we can begin to look for attachements for the old girl! Thats my story so far and I am sticking with it.

Welcome to the forum! Another Michigan Cubber!! Glad to have ya!

Would encourage you to download and print off the Owner's Manual and perhaps the Service Manuals (as needed) for your Cub. It'll help take you through all the areas of maintenance so you don't forget anything. Very helpful.

You're probably beyond this point, but here's a link to a thread that may be helpful as well:

Welcome to the site from nearby Davison, MI.

I am currently camping at Lakeport State Park on the beautiful sandy (and rocky) shores of Lake Huron.
I thoroughly enjoy driving through your area of the mitten.

Welcome to the Forum. There are some oddball lubrication places on the Cub, fan hub, generator, rear finals, etc. that are often neglected. As Stanton mentioned, a manual will give you the info you need to make sure you haven't missed anywhere.
