Along with replacing a rear tire and rim (other post), I also need to put new tires on the front. I have a pair of mid rise 10 ton jack stands, so support won't be a problem. However, real estate under the axle tube is pretty tight with the jack stands ready, so figuring out a jacking point is a challenge. How do ya'll do this? There is a "flat" on the bottom of the bell housing, just forward of the flywheel inspection hole. Is this a safe place to lift the front with a bottle jack?
Thanks!
PS - Someday I hope to be able to answer for others at least a tenth of the questions i ask

Get the rear tires mounted and then it becomes simple, lift the front axle in the center right under the pivot point, then there should be plenty of room for a jack stand under both ends of the axle.

Re: Lifting front of 140
Update: jacking the front at the pivot point was a piece of cake! Of course, one thing leads to another: I removed the front wheels to put on new tires and found that the wheel bearings feel “gritty” when i rotate the hubs. So....time to do the bearings while the wheels are off. The new bearing kits are surprisingly inexpensive - i think i will just replace them

Re: Lifting front of 140
Just to tack on to the conversation I noticed that my front axle has a small amount of play from the pivot pin on my 140. Where do you jack up your front end at if you want to remove the pin to add shims?

If I need to drop the front axle, I jack it up at the very front of the torque tube where the engine mates with it. There's a flat spot on the bottom of the torque tube and that's where I set the jack to hit.

This is what I did. Pay no attention to the jenga tower, I had a stand bolted to the other side you can’t see. But I did jack it up where Al mentioned.

Re: Lifting front of 140
Thanks. After I put the fan and radiator back on Saturday morning I'm going to start messing with the steering. Besides the pivot point I also have some play in the steering box. Just saw the post about lifting the front end and was like that's next on the list besides the oil in the final drives.
