Jump starting a 6v tractor?

Postby customcutter » Mon Apr 10, 2023 5:27 pm

I am going to look at a Super A for sale that has a 6V system. It is a 6hr drive one way. I talked to the owner last week he was going to charge the battery, pull it out and send me a video of it running and hyd working. Apparently he is extremely busy and doesn't have the time to do it with the way his business is booming right now.

Is it OK to jump start the tractor with jumper cables off of a 12v battery in my 2004 F250? Or will it damage the tractor or my truck? The only thing I can think of is the 6V coil

Thanks in advance, Ken

You can jump start a 6 volt battery/tractor with a 12 volt system. Won't hurt anything if the tractor promptly starts.

I wouldn't drive 6 hours to look at a tractor if the owner isn't willing to take the time to video tape it.
I have an excuse. CRS.

A Lot of people will jump start 12v. to 6v., I personally won’t. I would disconnect the 6 v. battery before doing it. I think there is serious safety risk, the 6v. Battery could explode.

After posting I looked up some videos. It is easily done, just don't jump the battery. Establish ground to the frame whichever polarity, then jump directly to the starter, by passing the battery.

Unless you disconnect one terminal at the battery, your battery will still be feeling 12 volts.
