Super A idle problem
I have a 52 Super A that defies to run at idle. I've had the head off, cleaned, replace valves, springs and seals. I've rebuilt the Zenith carburetor and taken the front cover off the governor to check that the weights moved freely and there were no broken springs. All the forgoing seem good and correct. The tractor will start but it seems regardless of what I do the engine continues to surge and eventually will stall itself out. I made a slight adjustment to the governor but still not idling at all. Is there something obvious I'm missing? Also it seems regardless of where the single carburetor adjustment is set it makes no difference with the idle Thanks

Re: Super A idle problem
If you haven’t already done it, I would check the entire fuel system, from the fuel cap to the manifold for an obstruction.

Re: Super A idle problem
The governor should have no influence over the ability to idle. My guess is that you still have a blocked passage in your carb. Don’t overlook things like ignition system and timing, they can often act like carb problem.

Re: Super A idle problem
I noticed the key word "surge" in your question. Surging is usually governor behavior but doesn't usually show up at idle speed. Start with what Don and Gary suggested. If you still have surging, recheck the adjustment of the linkage between the governor and carburetor. The procedure is well documented in the manuals and in multiple posts on this site. After that, clean and adjust the bumper spring that is in the bottom of the governor.

Re: Super A idle problem
Regarding the fuel cap. When I went on Steiner and Yesterdays Tractors, they have both vented and unvented caps that both are listed for a Super A. Which one is correct? Also Would substituting a simple throttle control (and bypassing the governor completely) work?? Many thanks for your help

Unless you are looking for "Original" for show, this is the replacement fuel cap...free due to a safety recall:

Re: Super A idle problem
The fuel cap needs to be vented. I don't know why vendors list an unvented cap, but it would be wrong.
Bypassing the governor is a terrible idea (and won't fix your problem). If it won't idle properly and the idle adjustment screw has no effect, your idle circuit inside the carburetor is probably plugged.
