manual for exhaust lift for an A

Postby ScottyD'sdad » Mon Sep 11, 2023 12:58 pm

I have a friend who is looking for instructions on how to rebuild an exhaust operated lift cylinder. I "kind of" works, but is jerky and slow. He'd like it to work for shows.
Thanks,

Ed

IH had installation and operation manuals that covered the exhaust lift. But as far as I know, there were no manuals for rebuilding. The cylinder itself is pretty simple. The piston seal is a leather cup. The main thing on maintenance is lubrication. When the system is in use, the cylinder should get a tablespoon of oil every day. Starting with one that has been kicking around, give it a good drenching. The lift cables, pulleys, and other mechanisms should get daily lubrication. If the pressure valve (the one on the exhaust manifold) sticks, it should be lubed with kerosine or fuel oil and worked until it loosens up. The pressure valve needs to be opened up and cleaned out periodically (annually in normal use). You need to make sure the valve (the flapper) has a clean flat surface and that the seat it mates with is also clean and flat.

One last thing, don't expect it to work at an idle. The engine needs to be revved up for it to lift.
