PTO versus transmission in gear...

Hi all; just doing a bit of contemplation about what I might be able to do with the SA that's useful. One option would be a custom built offset mower to mulch/cut back the shrubs along our road. My question concerns how well a PTO drive will work while trying to drive forward. As I understand it, the PTO is in the same drive train as the transmission. So if the PTO is back driven by the inertia of the mower, it'll happily keep driving the tractor forward until you put it in neutral. Right?
I guess I'll need some kind of freewheeling clutch on the mower to keep it from back driving? Just checking before I overthink things.

You might consider a self-powered offset mower...such as the Swisher line.

This brand is rather expensive, but there are others, as well as used ones on places like Craigslist or FB Marketplace.

Yes, inertia of an implement can drive a tractor through a transmission driven PTO. How big the problem is depends on the implement. A rough cut rotary mower can be pretty bad, a sickle bar type not so. There are overriding clutches that can be mounted on the PTO to handle that problem.

Okay; so, not overthinking it. That's good. I was looking at maybe using a one way bearing (or multiple if it's too much torque for just one) to make something to eliminate the back-drive. Then the inertia of the flail would work in my favor.
I'd rather not go self-powered, because then it's an implement that will need to be stored indoors (we're on the ocean, so anything left outside will rust). Not to mention another engine to maintain.

The pto overrunning clutch used to be available at TSC and such places, I don’t know if it still is or not but that would be a good solution. You might check EBay for one.

Hmmm.... yeah, an overrunning clutch is probably the better solution. Found one at Agrisupply for $36US; just need to figure out shipping cost. Or I could get a PTO driveline locally from PrincessAuto that has one built in for $330CA.

I do not think it is safe to run these with a big rotating inertial without one. You get pushed around a lot and can not stop where you think you will
