Need to I.D Super A

Postby browning1 » Sun Nov 05, 2023 8:19 pm

I recently purchase a Farmall Super A and I'm trying to figure out what year it is. First off the serial number tag is gone from under the seat. It does have the diamond front axle. On the engine 366204 R3 and C-123 is cast on the block but there is nothing stamped under the No.1 spark plug. thanks in advance.

All Super As are from '47 to '54. The C-123 block indicates at least '51. However, a blank engine number suggests a replacement block. So any markings on the block only indicate age of the replacement part.
The date codes like Dale pointed out will help. The locations will not be the same as on a Cub. But the code letters are the same.
Engine block: right side, low towards front.
Transmisson housing: right side above operator platform.
Touch Control block: on one side or the other, forget which.
Final drives: inner side, similar to location for Cub.

It is worthwhile to take a second look for the stamped engine number. Since they are stamped, not cast in like the part numbers, they can be hard to find. A couple layers of paint can cover them. They are stamped into a machined area right at the top edge of the block, behind the speed control linkage.

date codes are the way to go then. You should be able to date the block , the cylinder head (under the valve cover), the transmission, torque tube (bell housing), and final drives fairly easy. That will tell you if it is a 1954 Super A with factory C-123 (but a replacement) or if its an older super A someone added the C-123 to. Pictures would help us also because there are certain things to look for like tie rod end styles that help determine year range.

Thanks guys for the help. From the date codes looks like I have a 1948 Farmall Super A with a C123 replacement motor.
