Hand crank rachet?
Hi! I have a 1940 Farmall B that I am getting back to running condition. When turning the engine over with the hand crank to adjust the valves, there is a big "clack" rachet sound at 2 exact points in a revolution. Is this normal for a hand crank tractor or is something stuck? It has electric start also but I havent tried it out at this point.

Magneto impulse turning over.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

So does this sound go away once it fires? Seems like it would be really bad at idle speed. Lol

Re: Hand crank rachet?
If the noise is from the impluse coupling as Bill suggested when the engine speed reaches a certain rpm the impulse disengages. You can read up on how the magneto works on a cub in the service manual GSS 1012. A FARMALL B would operate in a similar manner. JMHO Stan

Impulse coupling, the snap sound, is supposed to drop out/stop at about 250 engine RPMs. When the impulse coupling drops out, the magneto goes from firing at TDC to full advance.
I have an excuse. CRS.
