Glass bowl gasket/seal
Hello, I have a 1950 with the glass bowl under the gas tank. The engine will not stay running.I removed the bowl , screen and seal to clean them out. It took a while to get the seal reseated to where it won't leak, but the cold weather must have shrunk the seal and proved that I did not seat it properly. This is such a a pain in the ass. Im wondering if I can just make a new larger deal with some inner tube rubber. Any ideas?? Joe.

You can. But, you should also be able to get a replacement gasket at your local auto parts store. Take the old one with you.

Also, when reassembling, the screen goes in the top first followed by the gasket.

JMHO, my experience with rubber in gasoline is that the rubber swells and leaks. OEM was cork, if you want something synthetic it needs to be impervious to gasoline. Nitrle or buna-n might work. Stan

Buy some cork gasket material and make your own. Did that today on and old Ford and a 140.

Re: Glass bowl gasket/seal
You don’t want to use that inner tube rubber! In reference to Stan’s comment, I once made one from what, I thought, was suitable rubber gasket material. When I came back out to the tractor, the following day, I had a bowl completely full of rubber gasket. When I removed the gasket, it was about 3 times as big as when installed. I had some other rubber material that was suitable and that second one is still working today. Either cork or rubber will work but has to be impervious to gasoline.

Re: Glass bowl gasket/seal
Well to follow up. I drained the tank of the pickle juice colored gasoline, used a bicycle tube to make a gasket, new fuel line and an inline filter, disassembled the carburetor and cleaned it since the float wasn't allowing fuel into the bowl, stuck it all back together and it fired right up. (Id previously worked on the ignition side of things since I believed that was the cause). Anyway, I'll go turn off the fuel valve in case the gasket goes south in the middle of the night. I hope not cus dang it worked great and was super easy to seat the bowl. Thanks everyone.
