Can I run an H at full throttle

Postby Mahoman » Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:03 pm

My buddy who I got my H from said that if I run it at full throttle while it’s under load it will bend the push rods he also said the same thing about my cub but he said if you go over half throttle the motor will tear itself apart. Is this true? Have any of you had an issue like that? I thought these tractors had governors for a reason... Maybe it was John Deere trying to undermine IH back in the day that started this rumor LOL

Thanks, ~Hayden

I'm struggling to understand how the push rods would know or care whether the engine is under load.

I know a guy that does tractor pulls with an H. I've seen that tractor loaded up to where it would stall at WOT. I'm not aware of him ever bending a push rod. He also pulls a 2-14 plow all day with another H and I'm not aware of him having a mechanical problem. I know my H survived a couple hours pulling a 2-14 in heavy clay at full throttle.

I call bullshit.

Tractors are made to do work. They will work at an idle. They will work at full governed rpm.... all day long. Your buddy is misinformed. Run it at whatever engine speed you like.

I have run an H at full throttle for hours on end. Not just light work. Plowing, dragging and running a PTO powered baler. It was a 1939 distalite tractor that had M&W sleeves and pistons pushing power above most H's. Let'er rip. Vern

Ok thanks, because my thoughts exactly were that he was full of it because I can’t imagine push rods caring either. And I haven’t heard it from anyone else. Thanks guys I just got my first H and was a little nervous when he told me that because I intend to pull a 2 bottom with it and I done feel like spending 12 hours on the thing sitting at half throttle

Tractors are governed and have RPM recommended limits as published in the manuals.
Engines can be forced to run higher RPM's than recommended, but if the engines are run within the published specifications, then they will be just fine.
http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractor ... all-h.html
The Farmall H has a max RPM of 1650.
http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractor ... l-cub.html
Notice that the cub max RPM is 1600 / 1800.

These RPM speeds are half what a new lawn mower is designed to run. This low RPM gives a very long life to these engines. Cubs and H's are designed to run all day long at wide open throttle and working hard. If your buddy was correct, there wouldn't be any cubs or H's available today.

I run my numbered series 184 wide open while mowing. It has the same engine as the New International Cub. I have never bent or swapped a pushrod.

H has push rods. Cubs don't.

Tractor engines will revolve faster than the manufacturers governed speed. Governed speed is typically set slightly above the engine's maximum torque for farming. Stationary operations, the same tractor engine is frequently operated at higher rpms to accomodate the appliance/machine being powered.

The Cub's, C-60 engine is used with modification as a boat motor, much higher rpms than in the tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Tractor engines are at their best at full throttle. A friend was doing a little mowing with one of my Kubotas and ask where he should run the throttle. I told him that if he was running my tractor, it better be full throttle. That tractor has been mowing here (at full throttle) for about 30 years and the engine is as good as when it was new. In those years, it's never even been close to needing an oil add.

Yeah what I meant by push rods is the part that contacts the tappets. This is my first (running) farmall and I REALLY dont want to screw it up because I use the thing most every day. I have two cubs, one is stripped to the bare block at my local machine shop. One is sitting as a lawn ornament until I get around to restoring it.

Yeah my dad has a new holland that we use for cultivating and tilling and mowing... and pretty much anything else you can think of, on the tach it has the 540 pto rpm marking on it and when he bought it the deal told him to run it smack on that mark any time he’s using the pto

That's so the PTO is at the proper speed, not because the engine cannot drive it faster. But if it makes you feel better the H PTO turns 540 at maximum governed RPM.
