In my Quest for an H

I don't know why I think I need an H, but for some strange, unexplained reason, I think I do. Anyways, I ran across an ad from a local tractor dealer who sells LS tractors. They must have took this H in on a trade. They want $750 for it, and it must be the roughest looking H, maybe tractor, that I ran across in a while. I show the pictures to my wife, whose only comment was - "it's pretty rough". It does have a 3 point on it. The right rear tire is pretty worn, but all the tires seem to be holding air. I don't think it's rougher than my '49 C, but the C does run. This H looks a lot rougher when you standing in front of it than it appears in these pictures. The pictures actually make it look better than it really is.

I wonder if it runs? And if it does, how long?

Curious...are those the normal rear wheels on an H? Pretty neat-looking!

I think some early H's had that style wheel, kind of a carryover from the F-12. That seller is very proud of his!

I'm no expert, but I don't think those are normal rear wheels for an H. I'm sure there are some H gurus on here who could tell us.

Here is another H that I found. I asked for a video of it since it's over 5 hours away and standing in front of it to hear it run and drive is out of the question. But if they send me a video of it, then it might make me want to make the trip.

Gary, I was thinking those wheels might be from a F series or that the early Hs might have used that style of wheel, but as I said, I'm no expert on these so I would have been guessing.

I think the flat spokes are a clue that the tractor was originally on steel wheels. Those were cut down and welded to a rim to convert to rubber. Google Image search "Farmall H Steel Wheels".

Yes, those are cut-offs from original H steel wheels.

What is so rough about them...it looks like every tractor I have bought. I like the before, but the after is worth it.

Both tractors lack fenders which for me is a huge turn off. If you want to be completely PC the second tractor appears to have a different throttle control but it is much better than the original. A 1939 H was the first tractor I drove and have quite a lot of time on it. Vern

Terry, I think this all hinges on how much work you are willing to put into getting yourself a nice H. The one in Chambersburg seems to be the best looking, plus it has a 3 point. But, it’s far away and a little overpriced. The closer ones are rougher and the one has no 3 point. Decisions, decisions. BTW, what does need have to do with it.

I have another H that I could consider, the one I drove back in August. So, I have choices and options. As for a 3 point, I think I prefer the original drawbar. But, 3 point does open up some implements.

Top to bottom a 40, a 43 and a 44.
I bought the 44 for parts but decided to fix it.
They are like chocolate chip cookies, one cookie is not enough.

I'm going to go back and look at this one again, and give it another test drive. It needs a left front tire, and gas tank de-rustified.
