Farmall h polarizing issue

Postby brian kov » Thu Jul 02, 2015 4:02 pm

I have every thing put together except one wire , it's the one that goes between the starting switch and the one side of the amp meter ,I am waiting for it in the mail . I figured I could polarize the generator with out it maybe I'm wrong . I tried jumping the a terminal between the newly rebuilt generator and the new voltage regulator battery terminal and I get no spark at all . At first I misread the directions and jumped the actual battery terminal to the a on the generator , could I have messed something up or is it the fact that I am missing that one wire ?

It seems as though I have another electrical issue which may be causing this , I have no spark at the plug wires .

Um ya , I think I may have answered my own question , I think the wire I am missing is the power to the amp box . Keep in mind I am not an electrician lol .

Yup, that wire supplies power to the entire electrical system on the tractor...

You could make one with the right size ring connectors, a crimper, and a length of 10 or 12 gauge "primary wire." All that stuff is as near as your local Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

No you did not hurt anything. Assuming it is still + ground, jumping from the - term of battery to the A of generator gives the same result as going from bat. of regulator to gen. of regulator, and should have polarized the generator.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Ya , I could have made the wire but I wanted one with the cloth loom . So I have it in place and I polarized the generator , got the spark so that's done . The lights work and the amp gauge dips down when they are on . Still no spark at the plug wire though . I have a new coil , it's been sittin for a while so hopefully nothing happened to it . I cleaned the ground wire real good on the distribuator . Not sure what to do now

If it has been setting a while, the first thing is to burnish the points. Not unusual for them to glaze over setting for extended periods, especially in high humidity. If still no spark (assuming distributor, not magneto), get a test light or voltmeter and check for voltage at switch side of coil. Should have voltage when ignition switch is on. If not, check fuse and fuse holder. Ones mounted on back of light switch are bad for clips to corrode. At distributor side of coil it should have voltage when points are open and none when they are closed.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I have spark at the points an they are operating . I cleaned them with an emry board , they are brand new . Didn't seem like a real big spark but maybe I'm just used to making 110 sparks .

Don't ever do that. You probably ruined them. Use a point file, kraft paper if they only need a light burnishing.

I just went back over them with a small file , hopefully they are ok . I had no idea that an emry board would be bad for them .

Seems to be a lot of gas coming out of the bottom of the carb ,it has been rebuilt but maybe that's the issue .
