Splitting a B

For those of us that are new to this Forum, can someone briefly tell me what “splitting” a B involves, and briefly why someone would want to do this? Advantages? I just can’t find a definition anywhere in the Forums.

I'm not familiar with a B, but with a Cub, you can have "front split" in order to work on the engine, clutch, flywheel, rear seal, and throwout bearing. Or you can have a "rear split" to work on the transmission or
differential.

As Dale mentioned, splitting a tractor, regardless of model, or even brand, means separately the front from the rear, the engine from the transmission. Extra care must be made to ensure you do it safely without damage to the machine or injury to yourself.

Splitting a wide front tractor can be perilous as the weight of the engine and driveline will want to flop to one side of the front axle pivot. That's why we preach wedging the front so it can't pivot.

On a tricycle tractor, it is even more dicey as you need a wide splitting stand to keep the front half of the tractor from falling over sideways, or to support it from overhead with chains or straps in a way that prevents it from tipping over.

I used a cherry picker on the front half when I split my B. I also bought a heavy duty trailer jack, on wheels, and made a plate to bolt the jack to, and bolted that to the tractor. With the wheels on the jack I was able to roll the back end away from the front after removing the bolts and throttle, choke linkage, electrical, etc.
