Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
Since it's only powered in reverse right now, anyway to load it easily in a forward direction at the place it's at? That way you could back it off at home. ( or back it on now and coast it off at home )
I haven't had the shifter off my 122 yet.

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
hey Jeff, the CC runs but its locked in reverse so only thing I can do is drive backwards and my landscape trailer is too steep for it to back up the mower deck hits the gate hinge, with the engine off the CC will not roll cause its stuck in reverse, I either need to get it in first or get some long planks which I don't have or find a hill and back the trailer to hill but its all flat where I am at. First gear would be the ticket...

If you have a small child to "rent" ( or light adult ). they could push the clutch in and it could be rolled.
3/4 of the way in is clutch, all the way in applies the brakes.

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
Drop the mower deck off the tractor. That will make loading much easier.
If the tractor runs - back the tractor on to the trailer. I always back a CC on to a trailer or into the back of a pickup.
If the tractor does not run - remove the spark plug. Tractor should roll forward and backward. Won't hurt the engine to turn backwards while loading. The hand push the tractor on to the trailer.
You could use a wench, fence strecher, or a come along, to pull the tractor on to the trailer.

Why not remove the shifter plate and return forks to netural, or have you already tried that?

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
Just my thought. I wouldn't do that until I got the tractor home. It probably won't take more than an hour to do the task.danovercash wrote:Why not remove the shifter plate and return forks to netural, or have you already tried that?
Bad experience agreeing to make a purchase at a stated price. Repaired the simple fix on site. Then the seller tried to up the agreed upon price.

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
Yepee I got it home today , pics soon I am still learning pics but I can do just takes time,,,,,, any way I got a nice 104 that runs there is a leaky head gasket to deal with and the shifter problem which I don't think is too big of a deal but still need to get in and investigate, it has a 42 inch belly mower that works and also a nice snow blower with all the hardware and rods also came with vintage sales literature , owners manual, service manual and 41 years worth of parts and service receipts over all its in nice user shape the paint is worn and touched up (I like that well used look) , original tires and a lot of slop in the steering gear.
Pics soon I am working on the down load now....

Few question for the Cub Cadet guys
What is 104 defined as I am guessing 10 as in 10HP but whats the 4
Is that a work light at the left rear
At the rear there is a large rubber strap is it stock of home owner
Hard to seee in the pic but is that muffler corect for the 104

That looks pretty good Jack
First, if you decide to fix/recover the seat, KEEP THE ORIGINAL BLUE PIPING. It's extremely hard to find that exact color.
As IH made Cub cadets, the model numbers kept going up. The 1X4/1X5 models were made 68-69 (iirc ) . You are correct that you have a 10 HP model.
Could be a work light, need a better pic.
Muffler looks correct from what I can see.
"extra" options I see. Headlights, creeper gear and wide tires. You did well.
You had mentioned leaky head gasket in an earlier thread. Get a genuine Kohler head gasket, then clean and replace it. Run the engine for one hour and retorque the head. Retorque once again after 5 additional hours.

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
The first 1 or 2 numbers are the horsepower, the 3rd number tells if it is a gear drive (even number) or a Hydro (odd number) and those numbers also relate to the production series. The 104/124 were the 4th series of tractors built. When you get to the Quiet line series (800-1650) they added a 0 to the model number because some of the first 2 numbers had already been used on earlier models. When you get to the red 82 series models (482-982), all bets are off, I don't think even IH knew what that numbering system stood for..........

Re: CUB Cadet 104 help
Slop in the steering is not a major undertaking. The kit for the steering sector use to cost $22-. Not sure the current price. Hardest task is removing the steering wheel.
Nice haul. And congratulations.
