My CC 1282 has a Kohler K301 engine in it. Well it threw the rod so I tore it down and found that the piston and bore where not hurt but the crankshaft was scoured/scratched. So I pull the crank and had it ground to .10 under. Got all my parts and gaskets together and reassemble it. There was only one small dimple on a tooth on the camshaft and one large mark on the crankshaft so I felt comfortable with the reassemble. Well this beast will not start. It cranks over smoothly but will not fire. I am pretty sure it's a timing issue because I have good spark and fuel. Can this thing be 180 out? I don't see how that could be possible.........Help.
Thanks, Ken

Re: K301 rebuild
Ken, this post is over a week old with no reply... did you figure your problem out?
You can download the service manual for your engine at www.kohlerplus.com
You have to use Internet Explorer to view...
click the "I agree" box, then "enter as guest", then you will probably have to install the active X component required to view the site...
Once you are in, you can download any Kohler motor service manual you desire, or view parts diagrams...
Hope this helps

Re: K301 rebuild
Timing on the 301 can be a pain. Static time with a test light and look through the sight hole to make sure it is lined up on the "S" mark. Trying to recall is there is two marks on the cam but would have to look at the service manual. If you have not downloaded a service manual for it you should find one. If this don't work repost or send me a pm.

Re: K301 rebuild
Update: Once I took it back out and started to remove the flywheel I could see that the flywheel key was sheared in two. This allowed the flywheel to be way out of alignment. Once i replaced the $1.50 key and put it back in the tractor (for the third time) it started right up and ran like crazy. Yeah!
I took it for a fast drive down the street and back. It ran for maybe 15 minuets when it started to stumble and died. I noticed it was very hot when it died. Now something in the engine is so tight it will not turn over with the starter. I can turn it by hand but it is VERY hard to turn. Boo!
I just pushed it into the corner of the garage and took a break from it for now.
