Rebuilding k161

Postby Pickerincal » Mon Dec 05, 2016 1:31 pm

I have a 72 that i am rebuilding. It has a K161 engine that I would like to rebuild. Is there any tutorial on this? Does anyone have any suggestions? I have never rebuilt an engine before but have done a lot of mechanical work but never have done cylinder head work. Should I take it to a machinist? Anything to look for to see if it needs rework/boring/rings etc..?

Thanks,

Brian :D

You can pull the head off and look in the bore for starters, see if there are any grooves or a groove at the top where you can hang your fingernail on it from cylinder wear. If you don't have the precise measuring tools to measure the bearings, bore etc. I would suggest taking it to a machine shop and let them measure it and go from there.

Thanks, I got the head off and it looks surprisingly good except for a little discoloration at the top of the bore, of course the usual carbon build up. and a froze up exhaust valve. This engine had been sitting quite a long time and I had to pull it out just to see if it was froze up or not. I think I am going to invest in some measuring tools and take a shot at this myself. I found a lot of info on youtube about head work. Thanks again.
