Seed corn grader

Postby SamsFarm » Wed Jul 27, 2022 4:54 pm

Old time, on farm, seed corn graders.

Who has one (or many)?
What brands was there?

Post pics if you got some!
Pics or pdf of literature if you have that too!

Was they set for a specific size, adjustable, or was the screens changed?

Any one know if some of the seed cleaners was used as a seed corn grader?

Thank you!

My interest in open pollinated corn, and these old timey contraptions is up!

In Boone, Nebraska was one of the largest Percheron horse breeders in the world, T. B. Bowman. His son, Guy, carried on the tradition into the 1950's. Guy also raised and sold seed corn, as did his son, Dale. Their grading and bagging took place in the loft of the barn. My grandfather worked for them grading seed corn in the '60's and '70's. I've toured the barn several times and was shown the different equipment they used. I don't remember any specifics, but think it was from earlier in the 1900's. He (Dale's son) said it's all there and has original information on it. I took a few pictures, but their not very good.

The barn itself is quite impressive, I think it's 60' X 120' and 40' tall! It took 2 years to build, he has original receipts with pounds of nails, bundles of shingles, etc. When my dad was young he played basketball in the loft, the backboard is still there and free-throw lines are still visible.

Pic #5 looks like it is probably a grading machine. Far more elaborate than a "on farm" sized one! :)

Yeah, I understand that they sold quite a bit of seed corn in the area for quite a few years.

saw a BIG one sell this spring over by Moline, Il. it had a 10 or 15 hp electric motor on it and a dozen inlets and outlets for grains to come out. Didnt buy it cause I already had a semi load to deliver. This thing weighed probably 10 or 15 thousand pounds and stood 14' high,--which I couldnt haul anyway with 13'6" being the max! lol! --- Dont know how the buyer ever moved it! lol!
