2016 Gardens
Anybody got seeds ready to go ! LOL!---I am about to start saved seed testing for the coming season!---Hope the weather is a bit more agreeable than last year.---the hulless oats need to go in just as soon as the top few inches of ground can be worked!--The onions will follow that, then the sugar beets! Sweet sorghum will be way later,--bout standard corn planting time , my red beans will also be later. thanks; sonny

Re: 2016 Gardens
I've got some old windows I'm thinking of hinging on top of some boxes I'll build to make little "greenhouses." I don't start seed early inside, but the boxes would allow me to get an early start on some of the lettuce, green onions, radishes! Mmmmmm, mmmmm!!!

Re: 2016 Gardens
Old windows make good cover for starting seeds outside and keeps the freeze off them.--I have a couple of them set up here on the south side of the house foundation so they get good heat. thanks; sonny

Sonny - that sounds like what I want to do. Did you build your boxes flat-topped or at an angle? I was thinking angle the top and face them towards the South.

Re: 2016 Gardens
I'm starting to get the itch! I have to get Old Ugly back together so I'll be able to get things ready. Was going to do soil samples this weekend but sounds like it's gonna rain/snow/something. Probably going to do my tomatoes in containers this year, it seems I can't grow a tomato in native soil to save my life.

Re: 2016 Gardens
I dug a bed to fit half of sliding glass door , then filled the hole with good compost and installed a rr crosstie on the south side and layed the door flat . the back side sits on a land scape timber and against the house foundation.---most guys make a raised frame , high on the north side and use windows over that.---I never tried that but should work probably better!---the higher the glass is from the dirt, the more long/puny/leggy it distorts the plants, from what I can tell in the testing and research I have done.
this year I need to make another one, as I have another half of sliding glass door donated to me!
Tomatoes can successfully be grown in containers. ---we used EARTH BOXES one year with good luck,---we bought 10 of them just to see what actually would grow in them and everything did well,--so there is another option! ---the boxes are movable and can be used anywhere! thanks; sonny

Re: 2016 Gardens
I haven't started any seeds yet!---Wont be buying any sweet potato plants this year!---they went from 12 cents per plant last year to $1.50 per plantor so for this year, and we had 600 plants last year!---I am going to try growing a few plants myself this year!
Onion plants were up a few cents per bunch, but we ordered 30 bunches instead of 60 that we had last year!
We want to grow some sugar beets and sweet sorghum this year and try to make some syrup!---also need to get the hulless oats planted this year too!
Most of the garden crops will be scaled back to a couple plants of cauliflower, broccoli, eggplants, etc.---matoes will be a fair amount, --have several different squash kinds to plant this year too,-- so wont have much time for any of the smaller stuff! thanks; sonny

Re: 2016 Gardens
I got my tomato seeds planted the day after the Superbowl. May get the peppers and such planted this weekend. Also, I just received some bare root Mayhaws to plant also. We'll see how they do here in the piedmont of NC, hopefully not too cold for them. They make a great jelly.

Re: 2016 Gardens
Might get a few things started around the 10th of March.----have the 3 celery plants that I brought in last fall,--they have grown to about 18" tall now, so they can go out after frost danger is over.--have a few sweet potato plants growing in the window all winter! thanks; sonny

Re: 2016 Gardens
Suppose to be well above average temperature in central Missouri for at least next 15 days. Average planting date is mid March for cool weather crops.
Going to plant radish, beet, onions, potatoes, peas, and asparagus, in garden in the next couple of days.
