Over sized pistons

On my 154 c60 what’s the largest over sized pistons I can get before I need to sleeve. The PO had a rattle in the engine after he rebuilt the engine he found out it’s the twin belt pto shaft brg. He had the head off and it looks like he banged the cylinder wall with a chisel. Just one shot. Now I need to go over sized to save the block. I bought a extra c60 block from ralph a while back but I hate to use it if I can repair this one.

You could use look in the parts book and see what oversize pistons that was available, that might give you a good idea!

.060 is available, there are places who will make bigger, few years back I had a customer who wanted more low end power with the biggest piston possible, was bored to 120 over and pistons were made in the Midwest, back then he paid like $800 for those custom pistons, cylinders were paper thin but he was happy

I guess cheaper to sleeve it, for heat transfer castiron sleeves would be better.

I just bought some .030 overs for my rebuild. Found out the hard way tho that after .020 the cost ramps up a bunch. There were up to .060 where I got mine from.

I might try welding the few nicks in the cylinder walls with castiron rod then bore the cylinder oversized.

I hate fixing mistakes other people do.

I use .040 a lot, keep them in stock as I do many engines

Hello, I just joined this forum and hopefully will pick up answers to a few questions I have about my 154. In ref. to your question about boring your block, have you considered boring only the damaged cylinder then installing a sleeve that would bring it back to a standard size bore? This is assuming the rest of the cylinders are in good condition. Good luck.

It all depends on the cost. The last time I bought a kit for one of these engines it ran me somewhere around $400. If boring all 4 is less than boring and sleeving just the one I would just bore all 4 out and grab an oversized rebuild kit. These engines run a looonnnnggg time so I would consider this a one time investment.

0.60 would be pushing it for a working engine. --- if its just running and not pulling much for long hours then the sky is the limit,---OR til you run out of block and strike water! lol!
