184 Steering Wheel

Postby jefftill » Sun Jun 25, 2023 5:32 pm

Need to remove the steering wheel on a 184 I picked up the other day. Have soaked it with PB for the past 2 days and used the bearing puller with no luck. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something before I put the fire to it.

It’s a tapered splined shaft.
I’ve had to carefully cut down the side of the hub with a sawzall and use a chisel to peel the remaining hub off to get it loose.

Even in good shape, they are a bear. I drilled 3 holes in mine (outside the washer diameter) and used a puller to remove it.

I used a puller like this:

Don't forget to thread the bolt back in the hub (quite a few threads, but not tight) before using the puller.

I use the same puller that I use to pull the engine front pulley.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Used a side grinder with a cutting wheel. This thing has been sitting in the open for a few years with no center steering wheel cover. It's all good now.

Thanks for the comments!
