Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
Hi all!!! So I got the carb cleaned and built. She fired right up and runs nicely now!!!!
First time it's ran for.more than maybe 30 sec. Now I've found that I got a cracked head between #2 and #3!!! I see where the are potential issues breaking the head bolts loose.. As in them breaking off!!! What u.guys/gals think of.my plan???
I'm thinking of pulling the tank. Then runningnher up to operating temp, draining the coolant, finally breaking/working bolts loose with 1/2in gun......
Also what's best bet to repair head??? Thinking of drilling end of cracks, V-ing them open slightly and brazing it up...
What say ye????
Thx!!
John

I agree with Tim, I wouldn’t mess with trying to repair the old one, used ones are deadly available.

I probably wouldn't bother with running it up to temp. The head would be the same temp as the bolts and they are both similar metals so they expand at about the same rate. I'd just rattle on them (in and out) with a 1/2" gun. Go slowly and hope for the best.

Re: Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
Hey guys!! Unfortunately right now I'm having to evaluate very carefully the repuar vs. replace options. Currently I have way more mechanical skills than purchasing power!! LoL ..... BUT.... reality is that this thing needs a head. Just took a second look a few minutes ago. Has an old Crack starting at the water outlet and extending out across #2 cylinder. ...... Running it yesterday seems to have opened,/spread it into a #3 cylinder head bolt boss and starting from there across to #4.... I could maybe fix.it but wouldn't be comfortable with it... would always be suspect!!
So "head-hunting" tonight!!!! Good.news is that I tried PTO and it SEEMS to b good....
Thx all!!!

Re: Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
If you have domed pistons you might consider a head made specifically for the 154 domed pistons. Might be a clearance issue if you use a head made to be used with flat pistons. JMHO Stan

Re: Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
I thought that the heads were all the same...... Can u educate me on the differences??? Long story short....I'm familiar with this machine backnto the early 90's. To my knowledge it is a "virgin"....
John
Edit::: Going by memory here, but im.prettynsure that they are flat topped from.what I could see though plug hole. I did not put a scope in it....

Re: Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
they are only domed at one end so put the piston down in the cylinder so you see the whole thing with a good light, heads crack because people are to cheap to use anti freeze, that is the thinnest part of the head, if it is cracked right down the head bolt not worth fixing

Re: Parts 154 "resurrection '--- has cracked head
The difference in the head is a small clearance change at the transition point in the chamber. The problem is easily resolved with a die grinder. It’s seldom a problem, anyway. Lots of people, myself included, have installed domed pistons in early engines. One needs to check for clearance but it’s seldom a problem.

The parts list page that I included in my post above was taken from the C60 engine Parts List ENG 1, REV 20, 12/75. IH originally included cub engine parts in earlier versions of the parts lists but at some point in time the C 60 engine parts breakdown was issued in a separate parts catalogue. It's probably due in part to the fact that this engine was used in multiple applications other than the Farmall/IH Cub tractors (IMHO) so it was better to have a parts list for the C60 engine. Domed pistons were used in the number series LoBoys from the beginning (as far as I can tell) but did not get into the IH Cub tractors until the introduction of the "Longstripe" cub in late 1975 at tractor SN 248125/engine SN 312390 thus the note that I added to the right side of the copied page for clarification. Cheers!
EDIT: There are additional differences in the C60 engine other than pistons. IMHO IH chose to use engine SN for the reference to changes. Some were specific to a certain group of engines, before or after the listed SN and some were inclusive of all SN. One example is the IH carburetor. There is at least 4 different part numbers for certain applications. Again it's tied to the engine SN but will work in other applications.
