Hello
I have a 154 that the accelerator appears to move back and forth easily and the thotle cable is mounted correctly but doesn't control the idle rpm and when under load it won't rev higher so I use a chain to pull on the govenor on the carburetor side. Is it in need of lubrication ? I really had to work the linkagew at the govenor and pry back and forth until it gaot easier. What would cause this to happen?
Thanks
James

I'm not sure which linkage you're referring to, but if the carb linkage is difficult to move, check the pivot location at the left front of the engine. I've seen them rust & bind there, a couple drops of oil made a world of difference. Several owners have also reported that the linkage arm on the top of the governor, that your cable is connected to, will rust & seize up, lubricate that as well.

Will the governor function at a low idle RPM? It doesn't seem that the weights would be turning fast enough to have much of an impact until you get around 1/2 throttle or so.
My 184 governor does not seem to respond at low throttle settings.

Re: 154 Govenor seems stiff
James C: You best get out your Service Manual and be prepared to do an R&R on the governor. There is a little ole thrust bearing which the weights push on that sometimes needs replacing. It'll wear or run out of grease, stick and can cause the problem you describe. It may not be the problem, but just be aware of it. By the way, when was the last time you removed the plug and inserted a grease Zerk on the distributor shaft and gave it a couple of shots?? It's all in the manual but nobody ever does it, even if they read it.

Thanks for the suggestion Myron.
I got the manual and came to the same conclusion you have about remove and repair. I haven't put any grease in the distributor and I've been concentrating on the govenor so much it never occurred to me to do that.I'll definately try doing that first. Thanks!

Hello
Well I found the problem, the weights were broken at the bottom and letting the heavy part fall out open.
