154 governor adjustment procedure

Postby jmbanner2 » Fri Jul 10, 2015 6:57 pm

I just got my 1971 154 running purchased from a family member. Was sitting in a garage for quite a few years. When going up hills or trying to run mower deck engine loose power and will stall if i let it. Has brand new e-bay carb. checked point gap and timing. Spark plugs do not have very many hours on them gas tank has been drained and fuel line cleaned.

Conduct compression tests, dry then wet.

Guess. Valve stuck open or low compression.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Before touching anything check your throttle cable adjustment so you have WOT. next lube the cross bar the has the throttle lever on it. The support for the rod where it turns can be stiff sometimes they freeze up. I don't think it's the governor just yet.

Btw put seafoam in the gas and oil the rings and valves need this upper lube. Trust me it works you will see the difference.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Grease the deck. Check the mule drive pullies.

I jog my pto to get the 3260 deck spinning then lock the pto in once it's turning. There's a lot to get spinning there mass wise. The 5/8" belts eat up horse power

Keep that cross shaft oiled with good penetrating oil. It doesn't take long for it to get stiff. Also, take a good look at the shaft itself. They can get worn and sloppy. The keyed end that enters the governor tends to wear and have some slop. When the governor calls for more fuel and turns the shaft, the carb doesn't move due to the wear / slop. I think the solution for this is to clean and JB Weld the shaft end. There should be a How To on the forum for this.
