New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
Just picked up a Cub 154 today with a blade and 60" mowing deck. It's not the prettiest but it starts up great, hydraulics work great, PTO is good to go, I don't see any mechanical problems. The previous owner explained to me about a sheared shaft in the mowing deck and told me this was a Woods model. The shear is right at the nut that holds the blade on underneath the mower. In the pictures, I've removed the whole spindle to work on it.
I know nothing about Cubs or Woods mowers so I'm trying to figure out what kind of mowing deck this is so I can find the replacement part I need. If you know how to take the spindle apart, that would be helpful too.
After some googling, I see that Woods L59 mowers are popular on these Cubs but they seem to have caster wheels. It uses one long belt from the PTO to the deck and a second belt to run the three blades. So, if you know what kind of deck this is, let me know.
Thanks
Is this an original Cub blade?
I have the PTO spindle and cover in a box of misc parts I got from the previous owner.

Re: New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
I can't help you with ID of the blade or mower deck but you might find some information in the pdf manuals at the top of this page. Look for NUMBERED SERIES LOBOY, then select 154. There is one on 3 spindle IH mowers. There is also information on WOODS mowers in one of the manual sections. I have a PENNINGTON 3 blade deck that the spindles look similar to your pictures. The blade adapter (spacer) above the blade on mine is held in position by a halfmoon key. When I first removed it, the key was partially sheared and very difficult to get off the shaft. The sheave on mine is a tapered bushing type and was also difficult to remove because it had sat exposed for many years and rust had taken its toll. There are tapered bearings and grease/oil seals on top and bottom behind the sheave and blade adapter. PM if you need some pictures and I'll see what I can find. A note of caution: The sheave might be cast so bear that in mind when you start to work on it. The picture is one that I got to have spare parts. Click on the picture to make it larger. Stan
EDIT: I reread you post and looks like the spindle shaft is broken. If you can't ID what it is, you can probably get a machine shop to make you one. Not too difficult to do if you have access to someone with the right tools and equipment. I have 3 spares for the Pennington. Where are you located?

Thanks for the info. I'm located in Englewood, OH. Looks like your in AL.
I'll go through all of the manuals and hopefully my deck will be in there.

Re: New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
OK, after a ton of research online I think it's a 3160A. The center pulley has part number 106796C1, which I found goes to a 3160A. I found what looks like a serial number on the deck (3100161UO11375). The 3100161UO part matches up with what others have posted for their 3160A numbers.
Still can't figure out how to take the spindle apart though...

Re: New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
Have you removed the sheave yet? Mine referenced in the post above had to be disassembled from the top side. You will probably destroy the top seal getting it apart but hopefully can still read the IDnumbers. A parts supplier can mike the shaft and housing for you and get a replacement. Good Luck, Stan

Yeah, evidently set up for scraping snow off the ceiling. It is the correct #54 blade made by IH.

There is an Operator's manual for the #54 blade mounted on a 154 showing mounting instructions and adjustments in the manuals links at the top of this page. Stan

Re: New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
I don't have the sheave off yet but I haven't been able to spend much time on it either. Thanks for the heads up on the blade. I checked out the manual and it's definitely upside down. I'm also missing a spring-looking device that's supposed to apply down pressure. The PO never noticed it was upside down.

Re: New 154 owner, what mowing deck do I have?
I got the pulley off without breaking it. It has a tapered fit like you said.
Do I need a press to remove the bearings or can it safely be hammered out?

If it is like mine, take a look for a oil/grease seal at the top of the spindle housing. You will probably have to dig it out with a screwdriver or small chisel. Underneath the seal, there should be a nut or something that holds the shaft in the housing. On the bottom end of the shaft where the nut is broken off, you might be able to hold the shaft in a vice to disassemble it. There should be another seal behind the blade adapter. Use caution on pounding on the shaft, it will swell and the sheave will not go back on. That might not be an issue if you have to replace the shaft. If you decide to try to have one made, the machinest can duplicate the shaft, it will probably have some steps in it to hold the bearings in place.

Thought you might be interested, I just got this information from John B (forum member) that shows the breakdown of the PENNINGTION mower spindle. Notice the assembly is held together with snap rings. I also got a parts list with numbers keyed to the picture. Let me know if you need any more of it. Click on the picture makes it larger. Stan
