new 185 owner with noise in the trans.

Hi all
I am just starting to go threw the 185 and am concerned about how loud the trans is.
it set for 3 years and was about 2-3 qt's low
so far I have drained the fluid and pulled the filter and will be replacing with fresh.

any other thoughts will be help full

Depends on what the noise is. If it's a little whiny in 2nd gear, that's pretty common. Putting the correct fluid in it, to the correct level, will help this, but it's not going to go away. If it's clunky, or sounding like marbles rolling around, then there is a problem and will likely need to be disassembled and rebuilt.

While the cover is off, make sure to wipe out the insides of the housing. Maybe even use a brake or carburetor cleaner to really degrease things, wipe out the extra sitting in the bottom, before you fill it back up with fluid. These trannys tend to get really gunked up, especially if they've sat with water in them. Also, pay attention to what you're pulling out when wiping out the bottom. Make sure there are no parts/pieces/or metal filings.

In addition to what gitractorman mentioned, first gear is really noisy sometimes due to worn gears. Check the first/reverse sliding gear for wear. This gear is the most likely one to be worn, usually due to the clutch brake not working properly.

Update;
It looked like someone added gear lube to the mix too.
drained it over night and sprayed it out with break cleaner,got a lot of gunk out of the bottom.
ran a magnet around the bottom of the gear box and all the liquids that were drained,, No metal at all on the magnet

checked the lash [free play] in all the gears and they were tight
except the spider gears in the differential [a bit sloppy]
re filled and new filter installed.
cut the noise by 50% and only in first and reverse now
going to run it for a wile and keep a close eye on it

The previous owners did some amazing stuff that needs resolving, like using Teflon tape to make up the difference between a 5/16 bolt and a 3/8 threaded hole for the inspection cover[wen I get to posting pictures ill put it up]

so for now we will see what other goodies a wait for me

I'd get hung by toes for using Teflon tape. ( in hydraulics) I never thought about using it in threaded holes. Lmao

We had a guy cut the heads off the bolts and glue them in the holes on the machine. These were thru holes below the two 55 gallons of hydraulic oil. Many pallets of speedy dri to clean up that unless. We put him in another department operating a broom.
