Gearbox noise question Cub 185

Postby Brianleibo » Sat Oct 15, 2016 5:48 pm

Seems like reverse and first cause more noise in transmission than if your in 2nd or 3rd. Actually makes little or no noise in 2nd. Or 3rd. Tractor runs fine just louder gear noise when in 1at or reverse. Is this normal for low gear or are my 1st and reverse gears worn to the point that it causing this whining noise. Opinions? Thx Brian :tractor:

It could be the 1st/reverse "sliding gear" that's making the noise, a very common problem. This is the easiest gear to replace and is usually the first thing I try when I find a noisy transmission. Take the shifter cover off the top of the transmission and you can see this gear and probably tell if its too worn.

Can this gear replacement be done with just the cover removed and does the sheet metal have to be removed prior to removing the shifter cover? Another thing I've noticed is that when your in the 1 and r gear you can shift fine from reverse to 1 or vise versa but it seems to have a hard to to shift to the other 2,3 gear and when it finally goes it works fine in 2 or 3 but when you go back to wanting 1 or reverse it takes some playing with...Brian
