Throttle Cable & Governor Connection

Postby Greg Armstrong » Mon Sep 18, 2017 11:13 am

My throttle lever & cable are shot. The tab that holds the cable at the lever under the dash keeps bending and the cable pulls out, The other end of the cable is really bent up and slips sometimes. Are all aftermarket throttle lever and cables created equally, or are there some sellers I should stay away from?

Also, I notice there are 2 holes on the spring throttle lever on the governor (#11), one close to the top and one closer to the pivot point - this is where the throttle cable is currently connected... what's the top hole for? Thanks in advance! -Greg

I hate getting old and forgetful. For 3 days I've been working on the 3260 mower deck, sitting on the floor in front of my 154. Memory slips, intention was to check the cable connection to the governor.

OK. Done made a note to check the linkage. Will probably be tomorrow afternoon or Friday, since I have a medical appointment tomorrow.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Top hole is for a 184 and 185. Bottom hole is for the lower RPM (Earlier) 154's.

This explains why I can never achieve full rpm no matter what adjustments I make. :thanx:

My early 154 has the throttle cable connected to the bottom hole in the governor arm.

Well, my 184 has it in the lower hole and it seems to run pretty good. To be honest I never really run it at the higher rpm range (greater than 2000) very much. Also, I don't run a mower off of the motor--I pull a Swisher rough cut or a disc at the deer plots. When I use the 3 pt carrier or the boom pole I'm usually not going too fast for safety reasons.

After looking at the governor arm again, it occurs to me that using the top hole requires a wider range of movement of the throttle cable... I'm wondering if the bottom hole was added for the numbered series since the speed adjustment lever on the dash doesn't have as much room to move as the quadrant on an Fcub. I'm guessing no one moved the connection on my 184 to the bottom hole and it came that way.
