squash bugs

How do you keep them under control? I've hand pick them but I keep losing the battle. I tried an orange spray last year. Hand pick and the spray seemed to work until it rained and couldn't make it out there for a few days and they had taken over. Want to see how other control them.

seven dust or spray, also onions near by. they don't like onions
