What not to do on your spring vacation.

Postby Lance Leitzel » Fri Apr 04, 2008 8:30 am

Hi All, sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I thought I share my story.

Went to Florida on Spring Vacation with my family to visit my Mom. On Easter (less than 24 hours after getting to Florida) Loring, my oldest son, has an accident falling from a golf cart to the ground. He cried for a moment and then got up and wanted to go swimming. He swam for 2 hours, looked great had a blast, had lunch, played, etc. etc. Got tired around 3 and wanted a nap, not usual for him, but he had been in the car for 2 days. 2 hours later, it was almost impossible to wake him from the nap. We rushed him to the ER where they did a CAT scan and gave us the bad news. He had a blood clot that was crushing his brain. (it was 1 1/2" thick and as big around as a pancake and that he had 2-3 hours to live.) They rushed him off to surgery where they had to open up his skull and find the bleeder and take the pressure off his brain. Turns out that the bleeder was in the dura mater (lining inside the skull, that his skull had fractured and nicked an artery.) They did have to remove a part of his skull about the size of the back of your hand, which they did put back after the surgery.

Thanks be to GOD that the surgery went well, and in the words of the surgeon, it went great. The prognosis is for 100% recovery. Loring is not happy about his shaved head nor his 7 inch scar, but as I've tried to explain to him it sure beats being dead. Right now he's at about 99% as he does have to search a bit longer for a word that he used to, but it is very infrequent and if you didn't live with him, you'd most likely not notice it at all.

Not to be greedy, but if you are the praying type, please consider praying for his complete recovery. He has been a very brave 6 year old.

Lance! I am so sorry to hear that you have had to deal with such a serious injury. Thank God you and the doctors recognized the problem and were able to deal with it.
You will be in our thoughts and prayers as Loring recovers.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

God bless him, the doctors for being able to help him and you for discovering that he needed help early enough.

Y'all have our prayers. Sounds a whole lot like a miracle aided by your quick thinking and the folks at the hospital.

Thanks guys! It was a miracle plain and simple. The one doctor told me, it was good that we didn't bring him earlier as he wasn't showing any other signs of an injury, such that they might not have ordered the CAT scan that showed all.

Lance,
I am so sorry to hear about your son's accident, but so relieved to hear that he is recovering well.

Your story sent chills down my spine, as my wife and I are leaving our 6 and 4 yr old sons with my mom next week while she and I go on a trip out of the country, and thoughts of my kids being ok while we are away have been a real concern. I know that my mom can handle it, but Cathi and I will be so far away and out of reach, that I cannot help thinking about it.

You and your family are in our prayers, and we hope for a speedy and successful recover for you son.
