Propane Prices

Postby Eugene » Wed May 07, 2008 9:13 am

$2.45 per gallon. Neighbor contracted propane for next winter on 6 May 08 at $2.45 a gallon. We, wife and I, contracted propane last August at $1.75 per gallon.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene, at a $1.75 you're gettin a real bargain considering today's propane prices!
It wasn't all too long ago when propane out here was around 80 cents/gal. Now its around the $3 dollar range. In fact its gotten so high now, its a major expense for most folks, so much so, that my propane company keeps sending me letters to sign up for a monthly installment plan. I try to top off my 1000 gal tank in mid summer when prices are supposed to be at their lowest.
Propane and gasoline prices have got to have a seriuos effect on the economy sooner or later especially if there's no end in sight with these price increases. Just heard on the news crude reached another record high of $123/bbl. :( Filled up my Dodge Neon today $3.89/gal.
And oh yeah, i'll probably be mowing my lawn and brush hogging a lot less this summer with my Cub Cadet and Farmall with these gas prices. :(

Mom just got her contract for the next season. it varies, but has a cap of $2.29. She has Ferrellgas which a lot of people have had problems with, but they have always treated her well.

Clarification. The $1.75 a gallon price was the price we contracted for last July or August. We have not and will not be contracting propane for winter 08/09 until a bit later this summer.

EJP. The $2.45 price was from Ferrellgas. We used to contract with Ferrellgas until they moved it's staffed office out of the area.

I'm going to try to get a summer fill. Hopefully the price will be a bit lower than in January 09.

:( :( :( It's $3.30 here. What I don't understand is why propane has gone up with the price of gasoline when it's, from what I understand, a by product of the refining process. They're refining more gasoline to keep up with the much publicized increase in demand so there should be more propane available. Since the demand for propane has remained stable and there's more of it, why the increase in price? Must be an economist out there that can answer why. I just about flunked economics in college so I'm no expert. I always thought my economics prof threw the test papers down the steps and whoevers landed the furthest down the steps received the highest grade.

Propane is a waste product of refining. In the late 90's we were paying $.08, that's right, 8 cents a gallon delivered in California. It's still a waste product but it has to keep in tune with gas and diesel or everyone would switch to propane. Talk about profit! I buy propane from the CO-OP across the street from the propane dealer because it is 30% less. Talk about profit!

It is a good thing that mother nature does not charge us for wood. I have a feeling the demand is going to be up for a while.

From what I understand, propane is indeed a by product of refining petroleum, and you are going to get it whether you want it or not. The big costs with propane are the storage, handling, delivery, etc. not the basic product.

I'm just curious! How close is the nearest refinery to you? Ours is about 50 miles away and we're paying $3.30 per/gal

I think ours comes from the Coffeyville plant probably a hundred miles away.

You might want to take a look at this site for current prices: http://www.homeheatingoilprices.com/

One thing about propane for home heating/cooking, there are no highway taxes applied to it (at least not in Missouri), thus the lower than gasoline prices. Mine are usually about $.70 lower than the current regular unleaded price. I seem to recall something about being illegal to use home propane in a vehicle, but I'd see no harm in using it for a converted tractor :)
