A good spot light

Postby Barnyard » Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:05 am

I need a good hand held spotlight that will light up an object 300 o 400 feet away. I want to be able to see my back fence line from my porch on the darkest of nights. I see lights that say lumens and I see lights that say candlepower and I know they are not the same thing so I don't want to do comparisons. I just want some recommendations on what size I would need to accomplish this. Any ideas on a good set up.

Note to Lurker Carl - that one you had at the Tug that lit up the side of the space station that one night is about what I need, but I don't remember the brand or power. By the way, I think the intensity of that beam lead to the failure of the coolant pump the astronauts had to replace back around Christmas with that space walk.

Just before Christmas I picked up a LED Maglite. I got the 2 D cell flashlight which also included a AAA Mini Maglite. I can stand at the house with the 2 cell and light up the old barn on top of the hill. You can adjust the beam from spot or flood light. It is rated for 388m which should be around 1,200 feet.

I have a Garrity 1 million candle power rechargeable spotlight that will do exactly what you want. However, in searching the internet, I can't find them for sale. I'm sure I got mine at one of the big box stores. Here is something similar, although it doesn't say anything about being rechargeable....

Don, from reading the reviews it sounds like it has to be plugged in. You would think it would say something about a charger.

Doug, the Maglite sounds good. I have a couple of incandescent Mags I keep in various spots around the house in case of power failure, Maybe I should just replace one of those with a new one.

The specs do mention a Li battery, though. :big give up:

This one mentions battery charging...

Bill, if you want to risk $10 I saw these at my local Tractor Supply a couple of days ago. During the Christmas season it was priced at $24.99, then $14.99. Its clearance priced at $9.99 now. Claims 500 lumens and is rechargeable.

Look up Sure Fire light products. They make LEO and public safety flashlights. Carried one for years the LP6 I belive it was, that thing will fit in palm of your hand for combat handgun tactics and puts outa a beam of light you can walk on LOL, well almost. They are indestructible, have used mine for light, weapon, tool, chock block and couple times as a projectile.

You can also buy LED bulbs to convert your old Maglites. They are not al the same though, I compared one sold by NightEyes and a replacement made by Maglight, and the Maglight was much brighter.
