It's not Farmall but it's Red
Just picked up the 1962 GMC, it has 13,280 miles on it. I had a 65 stepside when I first got my license but I don't remember the steering needing that much strength, and the steering wheel didn't seem that close.....but I'm a little older now

Re: It's not Farmall but it's Red
My favorite was a 63 Chevy Step side that Dad bought after our very used 51 rolled off the bluff. 6 cyl 3 on the tree, no 4wd, but I sure loved that truck. Unfortunately it was geared so high it wasn't much good for farm use, but several years later when Dad bought a 4wd 3/4 ton I bought the 63 and drove it for several years.

John,
this one will handle farm work, 4 speed, 305 V6 and when it was retro fitted for the Barton American pump and equipment they added 1 ton leaf springs on all 4 corners. Surprisingly she ran at 60/63 miles an hour on the way home great....I was thinking she would only do 45 MPH .
I am going to contact a nearby vol. Fire Dept. who still has a "brush truck" like this to see if they would be interested in the pump and electric hose reel.
My plan is, in the future, to roll in to Barnyards shindig with a Cub in tow.

Wait till you change the motor oil in that. If I remember correctly the GMC 305 took around 11 quarts. LOL

John, I have the 305 D engine that takes 6 quarts, there is the B&C engines that take 10 quarts with filter.
Ricky, if I leave the tank in the bed, you know she'd have me watering her flowers!
I'm just having a ball going through it, pulled a compression test tonight and got 118 to 122 psi , I'll check again after a couple tanks of gas with sea foam and see what happens. But I am happy so far.

Surprisingly those old grass rigs didn't get many miles on them but probably got abused in their lifetime specifically the clutch. With all the different Firefighters with Various skill levels driving them.
Cant wait to see it at the Bash.
I have bought several Red Firetrucks in the last 5 Years. The last one was $600,000.
Red paint is expensive!

If you water the flowers with the high pressure hose, it might as well be a lawnmower!
When you change the oil, will you need to use oil with zinc in it?
I'm going to have to stop by and see that bad boy!!

Re: It's not Farmall but it's Red
Back in my younger days when I was going to college I worked part time for the US Forestry planting trees and on fire details. Our brush trucks got more miles on them than a local department, but they spent much of their life idling on sight and pumping. Engine will probably have enough hours to have run 4 or 5 times the miles on the odometer. If it tends to smoke a little, especially on start up or after running down hill and starting back up the other side I would suspect valve seals. It has been a long time, but as I remember, the clutches on those things were pretty heavy duty, it will take real talent to damage them, though if it is a hydraulic clutch the cylinder may need rebuilding.Steve Butram wrote:Surprisingly those old grass rigs didn't get many miles on them but probably got abused in their lifetime specifically the clutch. With all the different Firefighters with Various skill levels driving them.

We went through 3 clutches in my local volunteer department's grass rig in less than 4 years. Manual transmissions are not taught in Driver's Ed. anymore

Bruce, is that a NAPCO 4WD conversion? NAPCO usually put an emblem on the fender, but I don't see one. Nice truck!

Tom,
No, it is factory ordered 4x4. The Fire Equipment modification (Barton American) was completed in Grand Rapids Mich.
As far as "clutch abuse" I have not found any sign of abuse of the truck, other than the PO had overfilled the oil bath air breather.
I'm looking forward to getting it back on the road. I have made the call to have it checked for plates being it was purchased "out of state"
Bruce.
