For the record, more than one wife can be spelled either "p-o-l-y-g-a-m-y" or "i-n-s-a-n-i-t-y".

Re: Whatizit: Shovel
Maybe it is a shovel for digging holes from the bottom up.
Seriously, it reminds me a bit of the shovels made for hand digging holes for telephone poles (but not quite).

Re: Whatizit: Shovel
I was showing the pictures to a friend of mine and he said it looked to him like it was designed for popping briars, thistle roots, etc. out, which I believe was mentioned in one of the first 2 or 3 posts.

I'm thinking that you are on the right track. Maybe I'll post it to a What's That Tool forum. Thanks for the suggestions and the jokes. I love that we have a lighthearted bunch on here!

It was so fancy that a nice family of woodchucks rented out the whole basement.

Re: Whatizit: Shovel
I think its great to know what it really was made for. must be rare as it does not come up in any search, this is as close as i got. Ad is reported as circa 1910
better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it...( YES this includes CUBS! )

Re: Whatizit: Shovel
Here is a page with a more recent copy of the ad. (It has a patent date rather than "applied for").
