Re: Ideas for new barn and property.
Not to much progress this week.
Chicks are doing well.
Got more seat time moving brush and logs with the loader LoBoy.
Looking into mounting a garage door opener to open the sliding door.

Re: Ideas for new barn and property.
Of course Im having fun. That's the idea isn't it.
This weekend's work update.
Chicks are getting big, so far no loses.
Gathered up materials to make a coop inside two of the stalls.
I sure do like finding a bunch of reusable materials around to do projects.
Brought in another load of wood to split.
Stacked wood between pairs of of old horse jumps.
Filled thd LoBoy tranny with HyTran.
Raining now. Going to try and work in the barn for a couple hours tomorrow night while it is still above freezing.
Looking forward to the spring.
2.2.13 Groundhog Day, plowed 5 acres for planting in the spring.

Re: Ideas for new barn and property.
The railroad is on the back border of our new place and actually crosses our property of the place we have owned for 11 years. It crosses in a way that leaves a little triangle on the other side of the tracks and the creek. I visit it about once a year.
The rail line is owned by the Genesee & Wyoming now but goes way back to the 1880's. This was once Henry Ford's line the DT&I (Detroit, Toledo & Ironton)
We still have trains about 4 times a day, mostly grain, lumber, and tankers.
We like the trains a lot, and the whistle blows about a half mile away in both directions, so its nice music without being a headache.
Planted taters last night in the freshly disced new garden.

Re: Ideas for new barn and property.
May update.
Worked to get a new chicken fence up, all done, plenty of space for them to free range.
Started getting eggs today, actually on schedule to the day!
Installed a big double bowl stainless steel sink in the washroom. Decided that it was more use in this barn than the old barn.
Still have so many things to organize and clean-up but I realize everything can't be done at once.
When I put up the new chicken fence I took out a good portion of old fence, T-posts and wood posts. If I didn't have my Cub with the 1000 loader I have have no idea how I would have pulled all those posts. A choke with a short chain, hook to the swinging fixed hooks that I added to the loader bucket and most come out without much of a problem.
Taters that I planted about 2-3 weeks ago are starting to show.
I still have a sickle mower and a set of cultivators stored in the old barn that need moved to the big barn then all the Cub items will be in one place. I honestly didn't realize how many items I had, 3 tractors and 15 implements.(many duplicates)
I love having the space to work in, even though I have to gather tools from both barns it still is a time save just being able to move vehicles and tractors into a open space with power, shelter, etc. I am slowly making a shop out of one corner of the barn.
Caught my first chicken thief raccoon, trapped him after he had gotten into the food containers, luckily not the chickens.
I have seen several ground hogs that need taken care of, seems that we have a new crop migrate in every spring.
Couple of pics.

That is looking great Doug. I need to get back up there for a visit again sometime.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Doug,
You'll find that there is a never-ending supply of groundhogs and raccoons. I think the flies bring them in.

Re: Ideas for new barn and property.
Your chicken pen is nice. I'd be worried about critters climing the fence or hawks with the open top. Nice looking flock. Are those Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires, or something else?
The place is shaping up nice. Glad to hear you're getting used to it and using it!!
