47 cub and loader

I got this rig about 4 or 5 years ago, and it was in fairly good shape, except for badly needing painted. As time, health, and weather permitted I have been fixing the minor things it needed, and it looks like I am down to axle seals and engine drain plug gasket. Once those items are taken care of I will start preparing it for paint. Unfortunately, due to my health, it may not all get done this summer. It took me all day to get the loader off, which is a pretty simple job, but will probably have to take it easy and rest my back for a day or two before I do much of anything more.

The loader has it's own pump (no touch control), and I had to remove one of my Rick Prentice engine braces to get to the pump, then remove the pump and tie it to loader frame. Remove 2 bolts on front mounting bracket, 3 bolts in each final, and raise it up with cable hoist as I backed out. Sounds pretty simple, but I am paying for it.

Yes John, I know it took a lot of grit and determination to perform that type of work with your back problems. But way to go.

Sympathies. Getting old sucks. Also suffering from back and hip pain, takes me way longer to do a task that use to take me minutes. Spend a lot of time sitting down, looking at the task, to ease the pain.

I have a cousin that said he liked working with Uncle Edgar (my Dad). Bryan said his Dad would have a job to do and fly into it like he was killing snakes and about 2 or 3 hours later it would be done. He said Uncle Edgar would look the job over, go sit down, or maybe stretch out under the male tree for 20 or 30 minutes then go do the same job, and in about 30 minutes have it done. I learned from Dad. LOL

Getting work done, but not very fast. Have to limit how much I do in a day or if I don't I can't do anything for a couple days afterward. Finally have the finals off and apart, and one side soaking in parts washer. Will put the other one in in a day or two. If the weather isn't to bad Monday I will take the axles to local machine shop to get bearings pressed off and back on with new seals. Surprisingly for some reason I had a pair of the seals with mounts in my parts drawer. Will get the other seals for the finals ordered while I am in town, gaskets and 0-ring are on their way from TM. I'm afraid the paint job when I get to it will not be very high quality, preparation is going to be minimal. Mainly just to prevent any rust. I hate doing it that way, but back is bad enough that even with pretty heavy doses of Percocet the things I can do are becoming more and more limited. Most likely Mid-Mo and Cubarama will be the limits of my travels this year.

Bending over for very long to work on stuff is uncomfortable for me, so my Rick Prentice carryall, and some pallets to the rescue. I put a couple screws in them to keep from moving or tipping on the carryall. Nice waist high mobile work bench. LOL My wire wheel is getting a little old and tends to throw a wire out every now and then. They hurt a little going in, and even more when you pull them out of your leg. That is the reason for the leather welding apron in the picture, it does a good job of stopping those wires.

I had a couple of bright ideas TODAY. THE FIRST ONE WAS THAT SINCE i HAD THOSE PALLETS ON THE BACK OF THE TRACTOR TO JUST GRAB SOME DRYWALL SCREWS AND WASHERS AND FASTEN THE (&%$*$ caps lock) small stuff down to use my wire wheel on it.

My second idea was to replace my wire wheel on the hand held grinder sooner than I had planned. It stuck wires in me in 3 different places in a matter of 10 minutes. The 3rd one was dead center in my forehead. They sting when they go in, and even more when you pull them out.

Yeah, that's a good sign that it's time to buy another wire wheel. Pulled plenty of those wires out of me over the years. Look like a "porky pine" (Ozark vernacular = porcupine) after wire wheeling parts.

I ALWAYS wear safety googles over my prescription glasses doing that kind of work, and the wheel has already been replaced. I was also wearing a leather welding apron, but it was getting me in places the apron and glasses did not cover. The one in the center of my forehead was the final straw. A note for any that have not had a lot of experience using wire wheels in a hand grinder, the knotted wheels cost more, but also last a lot longer than the crimped ones, but they all become fatigued and start throwing wires eventually.
