Candidate for city council was campaigning door-to-door. Came to one house and a lady answered his knock on the door. He introduced himself and asked if she had any particular issues of concern. She asked him what he thought about the ordinance requiring owners of geese to keep them penned with covered lots so they could not escape. He had noticed that she had geese in such an enclosure. So he responded that he thought it was a good ordinance and she obviously was in full compliance, said that she probably was so before the ordinance was enacted.
She shook her finger in his face and said that he had no idea how expensive the enclosure was to build and now she had to buy food for the geese whereas they could forage when they roamed free. Plus litter was necessary as well as frequent manure removal due to the prolific nature of geese in that regard. She said: “I will never vote for you” and slammed the door.
Regaining his composure as he moved on to other houses, another lady answered the door at a house where he saw no sign of geese. As their conversation progressed, she asked him his opinion of the geese ordinance. He said he thought it was a good ordinance but wondered why she was asking as he had noticed that she had no geese. She told him that she once had geese but the requirements of the ordinance were far beyond her ability for compliance and she had been forced to get rid of her geese. With eyes brimming with tears, she said “I will never vote for you” and slammed the door.
Soon arriving at another house, he noticed numerous geese freely moving about in and behind the shrubbery and in the yard. Lady answered the door. As the conversation progressed, she asked him about the geese ordinance. He responded that he thought it was too harsh, too expensive for some citizens and that if elected, he would propose changes so that citizens such as she would not be forced to comply and her geese could continue to run free.Through clenched teeth she growled; “Them ain't my geese!”

I was once told by a 6 term County Sheriff " You don't have to keep all the voters happy just 51% of them"
