2017 Tolland County 4H Fair Tractor Pull

Postby Peter Person » Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:45 pm

Congratulations to Hannah for setting a new club record and the 1st girl to win the tractor pull!
6,650 lbs - 24" pull.

A big shout out to her brother Aron who worked with Hannah almost every day for the last several weeks to get the tractor ready. Hannah has turned into a pretty decent welder and has learned a ton about wiring, power transmission, and physics. When Aron took home the trophy in 2014 with this tractor it had a 12hp Kohler and heavy duty clutch. Thinking he was done with it, he sold the engine and clutch to a younger club member. Well, Hannah had other ideas earlier this year and decided it was high time to stop playing around with lawn mowers, roto tillers, etc. Time to go Big or go home!!!
Aron came up with a 16hp Onan twin from the early 70's that needed a few parts. With some re-engineering they were able to design a pulley and belt system to connect the engine to the input shaft of the Cub transmission. The Onan crankshaft sits about 6" above the transmission input shaft. (still a work in progress because there really isn't a clutch). No matter, the Cub transmission and Loboy finals came through!

Hannah did a great job! A talented and helpful brother, is nice to have, on the "pit crew", too. How'd the boys feel, to be beaten by a girl?

Ed,
Everyone was super excited to see the last two tractors duke it out. Last years winner (5,725 lbs) was competing for the last time as he has aged out now. Watching each one between pulls working on their tractors with help from the other club members was really cool. The atmosphere was electric! The crowds had grown to over 100 people watching and the Fair Director was announcing the results of each round near the end throughout the whole fairgrounds.
Good clean competition with equal levels of cheering for all the competitors from the 1st pull of 1,100 lbs to the last pull.
Anyone that has been to the club meetings throughout the year has seen Hannah getting greasy (not as bad as Aron  ) and knows she's all in.
