Help identifying a planter?

Postby customcutter » Wed Apr 12, 2023 9:58 pm

I bought a tractor and also got a planter yesterday. I think it is for a Farmall due to the square bar on the front that hopefully mounts to the front cultivator arms. Not sure if it mounts in the brackets that the crossbar mounts in, or if there are other mounting brackets that mount it to the existing crossbar. The PO didn't get it with the Farmall. He is a "planter collector" and had it for "yard art". From a video I watched earlier I think it might be a 172 or 174, but still wondering how it mounts?

thanks in advance, Ken

I forgot to mention that the tractor is a Super A, so hope it's usable with the Super A.

I don't believe it is a 172 or 174, but could be a version of them I haven't seen. The color on it almost makes me think of Allis Chalmers. but I don't know what types of planters they made other than some tow behind versions. We've got planter experts on here that will chime in soon.

Thanks Rick. I've been doing more research this morning, and I agree. It appears slightly similar, but very different from what I am turning up on 172 or 174 planters. Hopefully I can figure out what it is and possibly how to mount it.

I managed to find this thread and the planter looks identical as far as I can tell. Apparently it is a 180 planter. Still haven't figured out how it mounts. Anyone have a picture or link to how it mounts?

the uprite studs in the front bolt to the universal mounting frame, that is just a runner, you need a lot more parts to go with it

Thanks, that's pretty apparent now that you mention it. I was thinking that the square bar mounted in the bracket for the crossbar that the middle buster attached too, but knew that it was 45* off.

Can anyone tell me if this is the mount for the side dresser or another part of the planter? I thought it was for a side dresser/fertilizer hopper. The PO was not a farmer and bought the tractor for doing photos at his Christmas tree farm.

Yes, it's an A-178 or an A-180. They're practically identical. Anyhow you drop the cultivator toolbars off the universal mounting frame (the two big vertical nuts) and then you mount the planter there. You should be able to get the idea with this pic of a Cub planter: https://photos.cubfest.com/albums/userp ... er_024.jpg

Yes, that is more of the planter. Here is a reference that might help you some. It is about 4 pages on the A-172 planter. It is an earlier model but the general configuration is the same.

Al, thanks for the pic. I think I've got it figured out how the "runner" section mounts now.

Jim, thanks for the link. I'm pretty sure that the video I watched last night was either a 170 or 172. I knew it was very similar to the 180. I'll have to start trying to source some of the smaller pieces that I'm missing.

Unfortunately no, Pa has a hopper that he got when he bought some cub parts years ago. I'm pretty sure it's a fertilizer hopper though. It's a Cole fiberglass hopper, and looks like it would hold at least 50#'s of fertilizer.

The PO that I bought the tractor from had the planter sitting out in the yard for yard art. He collects old planters. I asked him if it was for sale because I noticed the square rod through it and thought it was probably for a Farmall. Glad I picked it up. Hopefully I can figure out what else I need to get it working, and I won't have to re-mortgage the house to buy the parts. LOL

I say he has a hopper. It's only the fiberglass shell, no base or lid, and I don't know what it should mount to.
