One Wire Conversion on IHS-130 Truck

Postby jostev » Sat Jul 29, 2006 4:36 pm

Just wondering how to convert my truck from a 6 volt generator, to a 1 wire alternator (12 volt) we have done this with the tractors, but my dad just wants to make sure we are doing it right...

thanks

Johnny

The wiring diagram Donny provided is good.

There are a couple of things you should know before you start changing a 6 volt automotive electrical system to 12 volts.

1) It's probably much (like a whole lot) cheaper to repair the 6 volt system than to convert to 12 volts.

2) All of the light bulbs will need to be changed.

3) You will need to put in a voltage drop in to operate the 6 volt electric gages; amp, fuel, oil pressure (if electric), windshield wipers (if electric) and turn signals (if equiped). Or replace with 12 volt equipment.

Johnny - gauge panel lights, the fuel gauge, horn, any relays etc. as well as all other lights will all need to be replaced or a dropping resistor used. It would be much, much easier to re-furb the 6 volt system.

Let dad see these postings. Then suggest a 6 volt alternator. There were some postings about that earlier this year. Try it in search. I can understand why dad wants to get out of generators but he might go along with the 6 volt alternator idea. As much as you have done in so many projects he seems to be backing you in your endeavors.

jcwhitney.com. Just for reference. JC Whitney's catalog lists a 6 volt one wire alternator (60 amps) for $89.99. Part #: EM268287.

Thanks, I have mentioned the idea to him, but he still doesnt' think much of it, just because he thinks 6 volt stuff is soooo hard to find... which from what i have seen, it's not that hard... but oh well i guess

Thanks

Even the best of us make mistakes at times. I rember clearly my last one. I thought I was wrong. Upon reflection I wasn't.

JC whitney also carries all the resisters, 12-6 converters..etc. you'll need if you go ahead with 12 volt. Besure to double check and don't ASSuME anything, as it's better to be safe than burn up $$$ doohickes and gadgets...

JCW used to also have a large line of 6volt stuff like horns, radios, lights, etc... might use that to your defence...

Johnny,

Years ago I read about a 12v conversion that used two 6v batteries wired in series. This provided 12v charging and starting systems, but allowed the author to keep the rest of the original 6v electrics by connecting them to only one of the batteries. I've never tried it, but maybe that would be a way to make both you and your dad happy. :D
