question about a Ferguson TO-20 carb

Postby Rick Prentice » Fri Mar 16, 2007 5:50 pm

Hello. Does anyone know if a carb off a Ford 8N will work on a '53 Ferguson TO-20. I stopped by the local Ford tractor dealer. They said they look the same, but show a different part number. Then they told me to go to a Massey dealer, which is miles away. I can buy a new 8N carb for $145, but the TO-20 is over $200. The carb is all wore out, with stripped idle screw threads. I don't have the time to re-work his carb, so I told him to just buy a new one and be done with it. This is for a friend, all my stuff is IH :D

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Rick:

You might want to give David an email at parts@chowntractorparts.com. They have a lot of Massey stuff and may have a good carb for substantially less. If they do and the price is right for you both it could be in next day etc., on Saturday or Monday??

I'll send him another email. No need to go through all that Rudi, unless it's a local call for you. The friend of mine gave me some money to buy a carb at the auction next weekend in Indiana. Steiners usually has a trailer at this huge 3 day auction. I just didn't want to spend over 200 if the 145 dollar 8N carb fits too.

Thanks for all the help guys,

Rick

Rick, the carb should work for him, but I can't remember if the mainfold opening for the carb is the same.

I'll have to check my inverntory in my barn, but I think I have an spare carb for an N series tractor. I've always kept a few spare items (carb, govenor, points, etc) readily availible so if I had to replace something quick, I'd have it.

If I find the extra carb, you're welcome to borrow it for a test run before your friend drops the $$$.

Odds are that you or your friend know someone in the area with an 8N. It takes less than 15 minutes to remove the carb,,,See if you can borrow one from someone to try :?:

Rick:

Just reached David. Learned something new. TO-20's are US built Fergies.. TEA-20's are the Canadian version and are British built. US uses a different carb than the Canadian.. so no fittee. Plus he doesn't have one.

David believes though that the Carb off of an 8n should be similar. The linkages definitely will be different, but the carbs themselves may work nicely. See if you can try one before you buy one.

Wish I could have been more help...

Thanks Mike and Thank you Rudi for checking.

I know another friend who has an 8N in a shed. I'll stop by and see if I can use his carb to do the check.

Thanks everyone for the help, I'll post back with the results and differences,
Rick

Rick Ford 8n: most popular carb MS tsx33 MF uses tsx605 but they both use the same rebuild kit. So there prbably identical castings. Ive found different mounting stud differences on different model carbs. Also linkage on opposite sides. As you probably know the price difference is based on the popularity of the item. Frank

Thanks guys, I appreciate the plug(s)! I'm pretty sure the 8N carb will bolt on, but you may have to use your throttle shaft and choke shaft. The 8N and TO20 engines are pretty close to the same displacement so the carbs should have pretty close to the same jets if not the same.
As Rudi mentioned, in Canada, most of the old Fergies are the TEA models that were British built and have the British Standard gas engines, eitehr 80 or 85 MM bore, the US built TOs have a Continental engine, in the TO 20s a Z120
