Here is a link to pictures I took this weekend in Ottawa, KS. I tried to include pictures of tractors that are not as common as some. However, there are a few pictures of more common ones. Can you say "Cub"? :D

Great photos.

I was watching RDF TV last night. The feature was a parade with common tractors. In the background was a motor driven machine, using reins to steer, being driven parellel to the parade. I wish the program has spent 10 minutes on the machine and the owner interview.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene - there were a couple of manufacturers of that particular machine. The name escapes me for now (CRS) but it handled just like a team of horses. It could be steered and even backed using the reins. There are some recorded interviews in some of the older recordings they run on RFD.

Great pix Ike. I always enjoy checking out the little known tractors.

Do you know if the rain cap on that Simpson is factory or after market?

Eugene, At Bigdog's Cubtug, I stopped by the tractor show at the county fairgrounds, and they had one of those that was made in Denver. Said it was one of 3 known to still exist. I can't remember the name either, and couldn't find anything in a couple of books. Guess they didn't sell too well.

I found this:
"A GM subsidiary erected whole streets of new houses for workers relocating to Janesville. The plant drew workers from other areas because the available labor force was growing scarce.

On May 1, 1919, the plant started making 10 Model M Samson tractors a day. A year later, the plant was turning out 150 tractors a day and [a] smaller model known as the "Iron Horse."

The Iron Horse proved to be a nag. Although it was fashioned like a tractor and had no driving horses, it was steered by reins. It sold for $450 but was such a failure in the market that Samson had to repurchase nearly all of the units and salvage them for scrap and parts."

It was on this web site http://www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/r ... us013.html

Edit: Even better, go to http://www.wisconsinstories.org/janesville/video.cfm

Go down the page to the GM story and click on "Watch Video". Scroll to the 4 minute mark for a short story about the Iron Horse

I've seen a reign tractor called the "Power Horse," manufactured by a mining machinery company after the second world war, when mining declined for a while. Interesting machine.
