Leader tractor

Postby Yogie » Sat Apr 19, 2008 11:16 am

While driving yesterday I spotted what I thought was a Farmall A setting about 100 yards from the road.
Looking a little closer I found it to be a Leader made in Ohio.
This is the first I've ever heard of and I live next door.
Just wonder how common they were?

They only made them for three years. '48,'49, and '50. I have a restored model D with cultivators. They come up for sale every now and then. They are like a lot of other things if you want one you can not find it, if you quit looking you might just trip over one. Pretty nice tractors. A little awkward in tight turns, but live hydraulics and a rather powerful hercules engine in that small frame tractor.

One of the local landscape materials suppliers has two restored ones that are parked out in front of his business during the summer. I've never taken the time to stop and look, maybe I should.

Gary Dotson - or more correctly, his wife Regina, is a leader collector. Gary can probably tell you anything you need to know.

I guess I'm a few days late on this post, but the wife & I also saw that one on Rt. 56, a couple months ago. Couldn't tell much about it from the road, but I think it's a 48. Leader tractors were actually made all through the 40's, but the style you saw was 47, 48 & 49. The wife has 4 Leaders, a 47B, 48D and two 49D's. Only one has been restored and it is her pride & joy. (49 named Princess Leah) On the lower grill, the 47 says "MADE IN AUBURN OHIO", while 48 & 49 say "MADE IN CHAGRIN FALLS OHIO", although they were made in the same factory. These tractors have a very interesting history and we get it from a very good source, being friends with the last surviving family member, who worked in the factory.

If you do an ebay search for Leader tractor, there is a canvas art print listed, which happens to be drawn from a picture of my wife's tractor. We have #001 of the print. Very nice work by the artist.

Nice Leader, Pony! I'm guessing a 49, by the adjustable front axle, did I get it right? We also have a set of those cultivators, but haven't put them on yet. My wife doesn't want them on her Princess, so they'll probably go on the 48 some day. Any idea who made those cultivators? Leader didn't make attachments.

According to the serial number I have been told it is a 48, but I am not sure. I don't know who made the cultivators, but they are easy to remove. These little tractors are definate conversation pieces!
