Treddle driven drill - ahem!

Purchased a sewing machine treddle and an antique bench drill.

Took the wheels of a bicycle to bits for the hubs and added sprockets off the derailliuer, added the drive off a push along lawn mower.

Bought some box section steel and various fasteners.

Added an electric motor.

It had a metal splash back to stop oil getting everywhere off the chains (but I'm now fashioning some close fitting guards) so it's noisy and best viewed with the sound off.

The garage looks 'busy' as I have a few other projects on the go.

Really nice.

When I was a kid, folks converted their treddle sewing machines into scroll saws. You still needed to pump the treddle to work the saw.

That's pretty cool!! A plexiglass gaurd would be cool so you could see the gears running. Great job!!

You're not wrong I really do have to be careful, not a lot of hair now but getting the beard caught would be a disaster.

I decided to go the 'close fitting guard' route, need to finish it off though, as I said the beard is a safety issue!

Grew it myself, feed it three times a day and give it the occasional alcoholic beverage, truth be told I've become attached to it.

Can't say the females in the family are too enamoured though

David, that is an impressive beard. I think the close fitting guard is a good idea, that beard would be a real pain (literally) to untangle for the shaft and gears of that drill.

Awesome! Ray has Gran-pepere's press drill and I happen to have 3 or 4 treddle assemblies .. so we might have a project to work on. I know I would love to have that kind of setup in the pole barn... where slow speeds are best!

No info. Searched the internet and couldn't find anything definitive.

It's been 60 years. I think my father purchased the conversion parts locally. At that time there was a Sears catalog store in town. Perhaps Dad got the plans from Popular Mechanics or similar magazine.
